WireGuard is a modern VPN protocol built around current cryptography (ChaCha20, Curve25519) and a very small code base. It connects almost instantly, switches smoothly between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and is light on battery, which suits phones and laptops well.
How a free WireGuard configuration works here
- Pick a server location and press Create configuration.
- The server generates a fresh key pair just for you and assigns a private VPN address.
- You get a ready-made
.conffile and a QR code. Each download gets its own file name, so a second download never overwrites the first. - Import the file into the official WireGuard app, or scan the QR code with your phone, and switch the tunnel on.
The configuration expires on its own; you can see the exact end time in your dashboard and create a new one whenever you like.
Which app to use
- Android / iOS: the official WireGuard app β tap + and scan the QR code.
- Windows / macOS: the official WireGuard client β Import tunnel(s) from file and choose the
.conf. - Linux:
wg-quick up ./file.conf.
When to pick another protocol
WireGuard uses UDP only. On networks that block UDP or VPN traffic in general (some offices, hotels and countries), try V2Ray, which looks like normal HTTPS on port 443, or SSTP, which runs over TCP.
