OpenVPN has been the standard open-source VPN for more than twenty years. It works on every major operating system through the official OpenVPN Connect app and many third-party clients, and it is a reliable choice when you need something that simply works.
How a free OpenVPN configuration works here
- Choose a server and create an OpenVPN configuration.
- You receive a username, a password and a downloadable
.ovpnprofile that already contains the server certificate. - Import the profile in OpenVPN Connect, enter your username and password, and connect.
Configurations expire automatically; the end time is shown in your dashboard.
Tips
- If you see "TLS handshake failed", check that the configuration has not expired and that your device's date and time are set automatically.
- If OpenVPN will not connect on a restrictive network, try V2Ray (HTTPS on port 443).
- For the fastest everyday connection on a phone, WireGuard is usually the better pick.
